Can a Tummy Tuck Correct Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti is a separation in the abdominal muscles. It is one of the most common pregnancy complications that women experience. As a pregnant woman’s belly swells during her pregnancy, her abdominal muscles may begin to separate, too, in order to accommodate the growing baby. After delivery, this muscle separation is often difficult to resolve on one’s own. As a result, you can either have an abdominal pooch that just won’t go away, or an actual vertical separation you can see in your abdominal wall and sometimes feel with your fingers!

Year after year, moms come to Dr. Sood to ask if a tummy tuck can help them regain their pre-pregnancy shape and correct unwanted diastasis recti. And the overwhelming answer is, “Yes!”*

Correcting Diastasis Recti During Tummy Tuck Surgery

When Dr. Sood makes an incision for your tummy tuck surgery, also known as an abdominoplasty, he has full access to your abdominal muscles. If they have become separated due to your pregnancy, he can easily stitch them back tightly together in a corset-like manner before removing any loose or sagging abdominal skin you may have remaining from your pregnancy weight loss.

Additional Cosmetic Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

In addition to repairing separated abdominal muscles, Dr. Sood can also better sculpt and shape your abdomen during abdominoplasty surgery. This can result in a tighter, firmer, and toned abdominal look that’ll remind you of your pre-baby body!*

Steps To Take Before Entering the Operating Room

Women should know that before they get an abdominoplasty surgery to correct diastasis recti, they should be certain they’re done having additional children. This isn’t because plastic surgery makes future pregnancies complicated or more difficult – it’s completely safe to have a tummy tuck and then get pregnant again – but because the weight gain associated with pregnancy will most likely negate your surgical results. And while Dr. Sood does have repeat patients come in for different procedures, he doesn’t want you paying for an abdominoplasty twice!

Additionally, abdominoplasty patients should:

  • Be a non-smoker
  • Be finished with breast feeding
  • Be at or very close to their goal weight, and have sustained that weight for at least 6 months
  • Not be taking any medication that causes metabolic changes or weight gain (needing these medications may mean an abdominoplasty isn’t the right procedure for you)
  • Be on a regular, healthy diet to maintain their weight
  • Have a good exercise routine they are committed to picking back up after they’ve healed from their plastic surgery
