Gynecomastia Basics: What Does Male Breast Reduction Surgery Accomplish?

We noted in a recent blog post that gynecomastia surgery, a procedure devoted to providing patients with traditionally masculine chest contours, rapidly grew in popularity as a plastic surgery option in 2023. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, male breast reduction surgery—as the procedure is known—jumped by 88 percent for men last year. With that in mind, more people than ever seem to be wondering, what exactly is gynecomastia surgery? New Jersey’s Dr. Mohit Sood and his team can explain.

First, it is important to understand gynecomastia itself. The condition causes men to develop the look of breasts on their chest. These mounds can develop with actual breast tissue inside as a result of hormone fluctuations, or they may be localized fat deposits due to excessive weight gain. They can also be a combination of these two factors.

The condition is not uncommon. Many boys and men experience some form of gynecomastia, especially during times of hormone fluctuations, such as puberty. The condition can resolve entirely on its own, with the look of the breasts going away and leaving a flatter chest. Men whose chest contours are shaped by excess fat may also see results with lifestyle changes that help them to lose weight. If medications or supplements are causing hormone levels to be out of balance in the body, the problem can also resolve by changing to new pills or stopping the supplements—if it is medically safe to do so, of course.

Some patients, however, remain frustrated by what they see in the mirror despite their best efforts. Diet and exercise can help patients to lose weight in general, but can’t be focused to specifically target the chest.

Anyone who wants to do something about a chest with more feminine contours can contact Sood Center for a consultation. If gynecomastia surgery is determined to be the best approach, it may involve removing glandular tissue that has developed, suctioning out fat, and ensuring that the remaining skin is not so lax that it creates a sagging look.
