What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery for correcting ears that are overly large or protruding, or that have other irregularities. You can have the size, shape, and position of your ears adjusted in order to make them less noticeable, more symmetrical, more proportional with your other features, and other benefits.

What Can Otoplasty Address?

Ear surgery can address a range of abnormalities of the ears, as well as the lasting effects of trauma. The surgery corrects defects of the ears that are present at birth or become more visible with development, or it can improve ears or earlobes that are abnormally shaped due to injury.
Patients who wear earrings sometimes find that their earring holes have stretched and become elongated after decades of wearing jewelery—especially heavier pieces. Some patients who have gages or other lobe-stretching devices later realize that they want to remove them and restore their earlobe to a more typical size and shape. Finally, it’s possible that an accident—such as a toddler pulling down on a large earring—can cause the lobe to tear. All of these problems and more can be corrected with an earlobe repair.

How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?

There are various factors that will affect the cost of ear surgery. Some patients will have work done on only one ear, while others will have procedures performed on both. Some repairs or reconstruction can be done either with a local anesthesia or with sedation. Our team will provide details on the total cost of the otoplasty and answer any questions you have about the procedure when you meet with us for a consultation.

What Is the Sood Center Otoplasty Experience?

Just as with any other type of cosmetic procedure, your otoplasty journey will start with an in-depth consultation. Dr. Sood will discuss your specific goals and needs with you, while also explaining what you can expect from the procedure and recovery.

The duration of the otoplasty itself will depend on the complexity and specifics of the procedure. You will receive either local anesthesia or be sedated, and then an incision will be made. The tissue of the ear will be manipulated or reshaped, after which the incisions are closed.

Reconstructive otoplasty also varies from person to person, with earlobe repair taking less time than a more involved rebuilding of ears that have been damaged by trauma.

Following ear surgery, you will have dressings or bandages placed on your ears, and you may need to have stitches removed later. When it comes to achieving optimal results, your recovery will be just as important as the procedure itself. Dr. Sood and his team will provide aftercare support and guide you through each stage of recovery so you can enjoy the best results possible.

What Happens After Otoplasty?

Patients typically need around two weeks of downtime after ear surgery but that may vary according to the extent of the surgery. It will be important to keep your ears clean and dry during this time, as well as to avoid heavy exercise and to limit sun exposure.
It’s common to experience some temporary side effects, such as soreness, tenderness, itching, swelling, and bruising. It’s important that you avoid touching or scratching your ears, refrain from resting on your ears while sleeping, and wear clothing that won’t need to be pulled over your head so you can avoid jostling or manipulating the ears while they are healing.

How Many Otoplasty Procedures Will I Need?

Most patients will only need one surgery to get the look they want for their ears. For some patients, a second otoplasty procedure may be needed to correct residual asymmetry.

Is Otoplasty Suitable for Everyone?

Ideal candidates for otoplasty include those who are in good health without any serious illnesses or untreated chronic ear infections, who maintain a positive outlook, who have specific goals in mind, and who are non-smokers. During your consultation, Dr. Sood will discuss your goals with you to help you decide whether otoplasty or another type of facial rejuvenation surgery would be most appropriate.
