Males of any age group—from babies to teens to older men—can experience gynecomastia, a condition associated with overdeveloped or enlarged breasts due to swelling in the breast tissue and other conditions. The condition is characterized by excess localized fat on the chest, excess glandular tissue, and sometimes excess skin. This disorder can occur due to hormonal changes, genetics, obesity, health conditions, or certain medications. It is often (though not always) caused by a hormonal imbalance, especially in estrogen and testosterone ratios. This can be influenced by diet, medications or supplements, major life transitions (like puberty), and more.
Many men find that their gynecomastia is temporary, with the breast tissue receding once their hormones come into balance. Others deal with the prolonged presence of breast tissue. We may recommend that you meet with your primary physician or a general practitioner in order to determine the cause of the problem, which may be determined through bloodwork and can influence how—and whether—we address it with plastic surgery.
Dr. Sood and his team will provide guidelines for recovery after this cosmetic surgery, with details including how to care for the surgical site, any concerns to look out for, and when you will need to come in for a follow-up visit. You will also need to apply or take certain medications orally to reduce the risk of infections.
It’s common to experience some soreness and swelling in the chest area. Even so, recovery from gynecomastia surgery is usually very tolerable. Most patients will need to wear bandages or support garments to keep swelling down while providing support for the chest when they’re healing. Some patients may also need to have a tube placed under their skin to drain excess fluid.
You will be able to return to your normal activities within a few days, and the swelling will resolve after a few weeks. At this time, you can resume light physical activity—and gradually increase it.
Following Dr. Sood’s instructions will help to ensure that you achieve the best possible results from gynecomastia surgery. Avoid subjecting your surgical incisions to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion while you’re healing.
You will notice that the shape and appearance of your chest are improved right away after gynecomastia surgery. Post-surgery swelling will eventually resolve and incision lines will fade over time. You may feel an enhanced sense of self-confidence following this procedure. The final results can be seen within three to six months.
Dr. Sood and his team believe in providing the highest level of patient satisfaction and maintaining the highest standards of patient safety while also delivering the most exceptional results for each patient, using leading edge techniques. They apply their extensive knowledge and experience while ensuring that you receive attentive, personalized care throughout each stage of the process.
