Regain a More Traditionally Masculine Chest with Male Breast Reduction in Linwood and Haddonfield, New Jersey

Gynecomastia is a term that refers to the development of the appearance of male breasts, whether due to weight gain, the swelling of actual breast tissue, or a combination of problems. Although this cosmetic issue doesn’t have an impact on health itself (though it can indicate underlying health concerns), it can lead to emotional discomfort and lower your self-confidence. Men can reduce the size of unwanted breasts with gynecomastia surgery at New Jersey’s Sood Center, working with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood and his team to address this common condition.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Males of any age group—from babies to teens to older men—can experience gynecomastia, a condition associated with overdeveloped or enlarged breasts due to swelling in the breast tissue and other conditions. The condition is characterized by excess localized fat on the chest, excess glandular tissue, and sometimes excess skin. This disorder can occur due to hormonal changes, genetics, obesity, health conditions, or certain medications. It is often (though not always) caused by a hormonal imbalance, especially in estrogen and testosterone ratios. This can be influenced by diet, medications or supplements, major life transitions (like puberty), and more.

Many men find that their gynecomastia is temporary, with the breast tissue receding once their hormones come into balance. Others deal with the prolonged presence of breast tissue. We may recommend that you meet with your primary physician or a general practitioner in order to determine the cause of the problem, which may be determined through bloodwork and can influence how—and whether—we address it with plastic surgery.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure designed to reduce breast size and restore more traditionally masculine chest contours. The surgery involves removing tissue to flatten the chest, as well as enhancing the contours of the male chest to create a “firmer” appearance.

What Can Gynecomastia Surgery Treat?

The advanced techniques used in male breast reduction can help you to sculpt a more naturally masculine appearance. This procedure involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue as necessary. The surgery has a high satisfaction rate and can improve a patient’s quality of life.

How Do You Prepare for Gynecomastia Surgery?

To prepare for gynecomastia surgery, you may need to get lab testing or a medical evaluation, adjust how you are taking any current medications, quit smoking, and avoid taking medications or supplements that increase bleeding. We will give you specific instructions to follow prior to your procedure in order to help you maximize your results.

What Is the Sood Center Gynecomastia Surgery Experience?

Your journey to a more traditionally masculine chest will begin with an in-depth consultation, during which Dr. Sood will discuss your medical history and your specific goals or expectations of results from gynecomastia surgery. He will ask you questions about your health, desires, and lifestyle.

There are two main types of procedures used for gynecomastia surgery: liposuction and excision. Dr. Sood uses a combination of both techniques for optimal aesthetic outcomes. General anesthesia will be administered for your comfort during gynecomastia surgery.
Small incisions are made on each side of the chest, and excess fatty tissue is removed from the body through a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. The devices makes use of vacuum suction as a way of sculpting the contours of the chest. If glandular tissue or excess skin need to be removed, or areolas need to be reduced or repositioned, excision techniques may be used for your gynecomastia surgery. Surgical incisions allow a larger amount of skin and tissue to be removed. Excision techniques are commonly used in more severe cases of gynecomastia but are made to be very indiscrete once healed.

What Happens After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Dr. Sood and his team will provide guidelines for recovery after this cosmetic surgery, with details including how to care for the surgical site, any concerns to look out for, and when you will need to come in for a follow-up visit. You will also need to apply or take certain medications orally to reduce the risk of infections.

It’s common to experience some soreness and swelling in the chest area. Even so, recovery from gynecomastia surgery is usually very tolerable. Most patients will need to wear bandages or support garments to keep swelling down while providing support for the chest when they’re healing. Some patients may also need to have a tube placed under their skin to drain excess fluid.

You will be able to return to your normal activities within a few days, and the swelling will resolve after a few weeks. At this time, you can resume light physical activity—and gradually increase it.

Following Dr. Sood’s instructions will help to ensure that you achieve the best possible results from gynecomastia surgery. Avoid subjecting your surgical incisions to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion while you’re healing.

You will notice that the shape and appearance of your chest are improved right away after gynecomastia surgery. Post-surgery swelling will eventually resolve and incision lines will fade over time. You may feel an enhanced sense of self-confidence following this procedure. The final results can be seen within three to six months.

How Many Gynecomastia Surgery Procedures Will I Need?

Gynecomastia surgery is highly effective and provides long-lasting results. Any excess tissue that is removed is gone for good. However, it’s still important to maintain a healthy lifestyle after the procedure. If your gynecomastia occurred due to non-hormonal factors such as weight gain or taking certain medications or drugs, you will need to maintain a stable weight and avoid those substances in order to preserve the results.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Losing weight can sometimes help to improve the appearance of gynecomastia, but even very thin patients may notice prominent breasts because of excess glandular tissue, in which case gynecomastia surgery may be the most effective treatment option.
Patients who feel uncomfortable or self-conscious about the appearance of their chest or who avoid certain physical activities to hide their condition may be good candidates for this surgery. You may be an ideal candidate for this procedure if your condition can’t be addressed with other types of medical treatments, you’re healthy and don’t have any underlying conditions that could impair healing, you’re a non-smoker and non-drug user, you have a positive outlook and specific goals in mind, you’re in good health, and you’re at a relatively normal weight.
